The 2001 historic DiMaria v Harris case was the largest publicly disclosed payout of its kind to an individual in church history, and mandated significant changes in the way the church handled allegations of sexual abuse cases.
Under the new court ordered guidelines, the dioceses agreed to create an independent victim assistance program for youths who say they have been molested, and also establish a zero-tolerance policy, victims' hot lines and abuse awareness programs in parochial schools ? supposedly now standard practices.
But are they really being implemented by impartial, objective "monitors"to protect those they are designed to protect?
